Winless Wonders II

Last year I pointed out that we all tend to only notice or acknowledge the highly successful teams and completely ignore the mediocre to bad teams. Some of the stories behind today's worst teams are of tragedy and falling from once prominent positions while other teams are so bad that it's no wonder they're horrible. Regardless of where some of these teams fall in the spectrum of sucking, they deserve acknowledgement for their perseverance as they fight on loss after loss. Some of these teams may go on to break their losing streaks next week or sometime later in the season while others will finish the year with nothing in the 'Wins' column. But one thing is almost certain...none of these teams will be winning championships this year.

Garrett Mountain Rebels (NWBL).............................0-11
The Rebels weren't always so crappy. Formerly known as the Dowling Cannons, this team has won 2 championships in its 8 year history. I'm unsure of the player history for the franchise so all I have to work with is the dismal present. The problem for the Rebels is quite clear...they're either a truly horrible team or they are terribly outmatched (the most likely case). They have the worst team batting average (.262) and the highest team era (5.61). Offense seems to be the major problem seeing how none of their players have hit a home run in 11 games played. They have been scoreless in 7 of their games! They're currently averaging about one run a game for offense which is not going to win any ball games. What's worse is the team's ability to hold their opponents while on defense. They've been outscored 84-11 this year so far and unless something changes, there's no reason to believe that gap won't widen in the near future. What's odd is that they have been primarily playing teams outside of their division. Perhaps they would stand a chance against teams in their own division, the Capalbo Cutters and Filippone Heat in particular. But in the mean time the team is winless and is the worst wiffleball team in the country for the moment.

Longview Diamondbacks (CCWA)................................0-10
The Diamondbacks are an expansion team and have been on the receiving end of some unfathomable beatings this year. They've been outscored 134-45 and mercy ruled three times! What's going on with this team? A host of things. The first thing you may notice is their attendance problem, a common symptom of a winless wonder team. They have about 8 people on the official roster but only 2 of them (Joey Beisse and Nic Rheaume) have played in all 10 games, everyone else has played in less than half of the team's games. After learning that it was no surprise to find that they were often outnumbered when playing their opponents. Some of the AWOL players are pretty good and it's safe to say that the Diamondbacks would not be on this list if they were actually playing with full strength. However, the team has been playing the cards they've been dealt and it hasn't been pretty. I don't necessarily believe hitting is this team's problem...it's defense. Out of the 10 games this team has played, they've only kept their opponent from having a double-digit score only one time. Apparently, it's a free-for-all once their opponent hits the ball. I'm guessing gaps in the field is to blame, not their fielding abilities. According to the CCWA website the Diamondbacks have been MIA since May 22 which is a shame because their next scheduled game was against the Fallen Angels (another winless team in their division) on June 5, which they might have won. They are scheduled to play the Fallen Angels again this Sunday, but will they show or will they peter out and maintain the reputation of being one of the nation's worst teams? We'll find out soon enough.

Fallen Angels (CCWA).....................................0-9
The Fallen Angels will almost certainly finish the season without a win unless a true miracle transpires sometime before the season is over. They are actually worse than the Longview Diamondbacks. For starters, they've been mercy ruled every game this year , never playing more than 4 innings (keep in mind CCWA plays 6 inning games). Jesus...there's a difference between losing games and being decimated . Let's not forget that they've been scoreless in 3 of their games and have not been able to hold any of their opponents under double-digit scores. The Fallen Angels are lambs going to slaughter each time they hit the field. Like the Diamondbacks, they are hitting the ball but that simply isn't enough when their opponents are scoring an average of 15.7 runs per game. The team's best pitcher appears to be Beth Sundberg with a 23.66 ERA, 51 R (only 46 listed as earned runs), and a dazzling 0-4 record. Despite the numbers I think Sundberg is perhaps a good pitcher and that the team has weak defense...afterall she does have 23 strikeouts to her credit as a pitcher. However, I cannot say that with assurance since I have not watched them play and I don't know how many of the Earned Runs given up by the team are home runs. Out of the 142 runs the team has given up only 90 of them are listed as Earned Runs which leads me to believe that fielding errors are a common occurrence for this team and the reason why they've lost every game by such a large margin. Like the Diamondbacks, the Fallen Angels also struggle with player attendance and as a result their schedule revealed that they were absent for nearly a month this season (May 22 - June 19). But the Fallen Angels appear to be back for the time being and if the Longview Diamondbacks actually show for their matchup against the Angels only one team will be left standing as the worst team in the league.
* Having absolutely verbally shelled this team I want to say that I admire their tenacity for still playing despite their long odds of winning.

Pirates (WATL)......................0-8
If William Shakespeare ever wrote a wiffleball tragedy he would have based it on the 2011 Pirates of Wiffle Atlanta. I find it absolutely tragic that one of the best pitchers in the league has yet to have his first win on the mound because his team is beaten senselessly week in and week out. Jordan has only a 2.00 ERA and has struck out 21 batters is just 12 innings pitched. He's only given up 7 Hits and 4 Earned Runs. So why is Jordan still in search of his first win on the mound? Well, apparently the Pirates cannot hit the ball. The team's batting average is .085 (ouch) and they've struck out 39 times in their 70 at bats. One of their hitters is 0-16 yet has 2 RBIs. The team has racked up 18 walks and that may be partly responsible for them scoring at all in some of their games. I should also mention that the statistics on the WiffleATL site are outdated and have not been updated in a few weeks (the pirates had 4 games played on the latest stats if that tells you anything). So I'm going to assume that continued striking out has forced the Pirates to proceed down their downward spiral of winlessness ... Yep, I made up a word just for this occasion. At best the Pirates might score a victory against the Dodgers or Donkeys before the season is done. But in order for that to happen they're going to have to hit the ball.

Backyard Bulldogs (WCWBL).....................................0-7
Pop Quiz: which team has found itself on both editions of Winless Wonders? You guessed it...it's the Backyard Bulldogs. With a all-time record of 28-63 this franchise is no stranger to failure. They finished last year in dead last at 0-10 and this year it looks as if they can do it again! This year's stats are not available online yet but I'll share with you how they finished last year. They were outscored 124-59. Their team batting average was .204 (44-215). Out of 215 At Bats they struck out a whopping 127 times. Allow me to put that in a more tangible figure for you: they struck out 59% of the time! Hitting wasn't the only problem. They had some of the highest ERAs in the league but their worst pitcher by far was Chad Westfall. In only 9 innings pitched, Westfall managed to walk 41 batters, give up 5 home runs, and allow 41 earned runs. What a disaster. Unfortunately the other pitchers don't do much better. As a team, they walked 121 batters and only struck out 75. It looks as if 2011 will be another train wreck of a season for the Bulldogs because there doesn't appear to be any signs of improvement on the horizon.

Beach Bums (Backyard Wiffs).............................0-6
The Beach Bums can blame much of their problems on the cruel mistress known as misfortune. Cael Keiss has pitched very well this year - striking out 47 batters in 40 innings. The problem is that half of the hits he gives up end up turning into runs for the other team (12 Earned Runs and 24 Hits). Where the Bums really struggle is at the plate. Cael Keiss and Matt "Tito" Todesco are 5 for 36 at the plate giving them a team batting average of .058, making them the worst two hitters in the entire league. On a lighter note, 2 of Keiss's 3 hits have been home runs. This team does not stand a chance for the rest of the season if they don't start scoring some runs. They've only scored 2 runs this season and have been shut out 4 times. The Beach Bums have not allowed a team to score more than 3 runs in a game so if they just get on the board and hold on defense they could win some games. Another problem is that they've only faced the top three teams in the league (which also happen to be nationally ranked in the Top 25). If a matchup between the Beach Bums and the Nuts (second worst team in the league with a 1-6 record) then perhaps the Bums might finally be able to dust off the wins column. But while that event has yet to occur the Beach Bums will most likely suffer one heartbreaking loss after another. Who could forget that painful 1-0 loss on June 17 against the 12-Inchers that went to 16 innings? Brutal.

Dirty Beavers (WCWBL)...........................0-4
The Dirty Beavers won the Thunderbowl (WCWBL Championship) in 2009. Clearly they have fallen from grace since then. They limped to the finish line in 2010 with a 3-8 record and it looks as if they've gotten even worse in 2011. Last year the Beavers were having the same problems most unsuccessful franchises have...giving up more runs than they can score in return. The only decent pitcher on the team is Lonnie Rucker (who also happens the be the team's most dependable player). However, Rucker struggles at the plate. He struck out nearly half the time he was at bat (50 Ks and 108 AB) but sort of made up for it with 42 walks. He's not a power hitter by any means so it's no surprise that he didn't hit a single dinger all year long last year. I believe the only reason the Dirty Beavers had a short taste of success in 2008 and 2009 was luck and good fortune is certainly not on their side now. This team might win a game sometime this year but they won't be winning any championships.

FP Paladins (WMWA)...........................0-3
This team was swept in a 3 game series against the Scorpions on June 16 and hasn't been seen since. The Scorpions are a tough team and that's really the only reason they are off to such a rough start. If they stick around long enough they'll surely find a win once they face a team they are more evenly matched with. Justin Morin (.227 AVG) & Matt Stetson (.217) are hitting pretty well while his teammate Jay Dasilva isn't do that that well (.174). The team has only scored 3 runs and needs to work on defense to stop the bleeding so they can squeak out a small victory here and there but it's not going to matter if this team is going to lay down in die without playing another game. They've only come to 1 of the 3 weeks worth of matchups, which isn't a good sign.

Dirty Birds (GDWL)...................................0-2
Last year Kevin Hancart was playing for the Green Bears and making a serious run at rookie of the year with his amazing plays in the outfield and decent hitting until he quit in the middle of the season. This year he was allowed to return but the Green Bears refused to have him on their team because of his excessive trash talk and undependability. Hancart is a very hot and cold player. One week he'll hit 4 home runs and really come through for his team. Next week is a whole different story with uninterrupted strikeouts and a nasty attitude. There is no in-between with him...he's either in the zone or out of control. No one in the GDWL expected Hancart to finish the 2011 season with his new team but it was thought he would make it further than 2 games. The Dirty Birds made their debut during Week 2 of the regular season on May 19 against the Hot Dogs and to no one's surprise lost both games. Hancart has not ventured to the ballpark since and it is doubtful he or any of his teammates will return. Kevin's performance was hit in miss. He had a .357 AVG with a HR and 2 RBIs but struck out 8 times in his 14 at bats. His teammate, Jordan Kennedy, was of no help if winning was ever on the agenda. Kennedy was 1-7 with 5 Ks and the only promise he showed was in the outfield. The Dirty Birds are a perfect example of the worst kind of Winless Wonder...and that is a team that willingly rolls over and dies. It's a vexation to a commissioner and can really bring a league down.

Ball Busters (Mick Fenway)..............................0-2
To be honest, there's really not much content on the Mick Fenway site and as a result I cannot really determine what the problem is with the Ball Busters. Judging by the name I'd say that they don't take themselves too seriously...and there's nothing wrong with that, especially if you don't care if you win any games or not. There's not much else that can be said.

Job Squad (BWLPA)........................................0-4
This team has allowed 65 runs to score in just 4 games. Wow. They haven't even been close to winning a game either. They are a disaster on defense but they can hit pretty well (team batting avg .299). They need to find out how to fix what's going wrong on defense. And fast! So far they've walked 18 batters and only struck out 2. This is unbelievable! It's almost hard to believe that a team is this bad. I think they're getting worse, if you can believe that. They lost their last game 28-0. If this team plays all their games this season they should win some sort of prize because it's going to take some serious nerve for them to finish the season.

The Dudes (BWLPA)......................................0-2
On June 19 they lost a 2 game series to the Westside Washout 32-4. The Dudes only gave up 2 home runs that day too which means that the Washout had an absolute field day with them as they hit grounders & line drives all over the place. This team needs to seriously get a game plan together for defense. It's hard to determine what else needs to be improved upon because they simply have not played enough.

Pirates (Nawn's Lawn)....................................0-1
So what? An 0-1 start isn't that bad. This team only lost by one run against the team who has played the most in the league (Nationals). Once this team finally starts hitting the ball they have just as good of a shot at the title as the other 5 teams. They are only on this list because they are still technically a winless wonder until they win a game, even if they've only played one game.
